Barberyn Resorts Go Chemical-Free for Mosquito Control

World’s First Ayurveda Resort chains’, Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort Hospital has replaced traditional chemical pesticides with gentle, insecticide-free Biogents mosquito traps to prioritize eco-conscious travelers and the environment. This compassionate step reflects their commitment to responsible tourism and the local ecosystem’s health. These traps protect birds, bees, butterflies, moths, and other wildlife on our hotel premises, preserving our natural environment.

Introduced to the Sri Lankan market by the leading pest management firm, Suren Cooke Agencies (SCA), this eco-friendly trap provides round-the-clock protection to guests and staff without a single spray of chemicals. It eliminates the need for frequent fogging or spraying, which can disrupt the guest experience and harm the surrounding biodiversity.

Biogents traps work by using artificial scents and CO₂ to mimic human breath, attracting mosquitoes 24/7 in both indoor and outdoor environments. Once lured by the odor and CO₂ plume, mosquitoes fly against the air current toward the trap. This system has been proven to reduce local mosquito populations by up to 80% while leaving beneficial insects and pollinators unharmed.

As part of the service, SCA’s team of professional entomologists provides the clients with detailed data reports, including mosquito counts and the species. This data-driven approach enables hotels to proactively prevent outbreaks by identifying spikes in mosquito activity before a possible outbreak.

“The transition to eco-friendly mosquito traps aligns with our broader sustainability goals and assure our international guests that safety and sustainability can go hand in hand,” said Dr. Asanga Rodrigo

“We are prioritising both guest well-being and environmental stewardship, and the feedback from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive. This decision has also earned praise from environmental advocates, tourism stakeholders, and leading international travel platforms,” Ms. Ruvi Rodrigo added.

Director of Suren Cooke Agencies Sheran Cooke said that this move is particularly significant in light of the global advisories on mosquito-borne illnesses as well as the concerns raised over environmental risks of pesticide use, especially in sites within Sri Lanka’s ecologically sensitive regions and lush tropical landscapes. “Even global hospitality giants have partnered with us to implement this sustainable mosquito control system. We are encouraging its implementation across Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector. This will be a major boost to Sri Lanka’s image as a safe and eco-friendly travel destination,” he added.
